Heat pump water heating technology greatly reduces the energy requirements to create hot water. This ground breaking technology is the benchmark for water heater efficiency. For each watt the Accelera's fan and compressor consumes, the equivalent of 3 to 5 watts of hot water are produced. The best so-called "high efficiency" heaters can only make 1 watt of hot water with each watt of energy they use.
Designed to use the backup element as little as possible
Accelera heat pump water heaters were designed to supply up to 80% of an average household's annual hot water needs using the heat pump, not the backup element. This results to the lowest energy costs for hot water while still producing enough hot water to keep everyone happy. This can be done by preventing cold water from entering the tank and mixing with the hot water already inside the tank. That way, maximum heat can be drawn before using the backup element.
How the heat pump works in your Accelera
The Accelera works like an air conditioner. Only, instead of dumping the heat outdoors, it transfers all that heat into the water tank.
The heat pump system features a fan which forces room air through an evaporator (1). It contains a liquid refrigerant that takes heat from the ambient air while it evaporates. The refrigerant changes into a gas as it warms.
The warm gaseous refrigerant goes through the compressor (2) that increases its pressure. While the pressure increases, refrigerant gets warmer until it becomes hot.
The hot refrigerant then goes through the condenser (3), which wraps around the water tank. Heat travels from hot to cold, so the refrigerant transfers the heat to the water.
The refrigerant, now a super-cool liquid, then goes through an expansion valve (4), where it becomes a gas and the process begins again.
